Connie Fleming on Fashion, Transness, Downtown Culture & Making an Image Your Own
TRAN MAGAZINE: You’ve lived through and helped shape so many different eras of New York’s queer and fashion worlds. Take us back to the beginning. What first drew you to fashion, nightlife, and the downtown scene, and when did you realize that image could become a form of self-expression?
TRAN MAGAZINE: Your style has always felt bigger than simply getting dressed—it’s theatrical, provocative, and deeply connected to performance and identity. What does fashion allow you to communicate that words sometimes can’t?
TRAN MAGAZINE: You came of age in a period when being openly trans in fashion, nightlife, and popular culture carried very different risks than it does today. How did being a trans woman shape the way you approached your image, your body, and your presence in those spaces?
TRAN MAGAZINE: You’ve been part of a lineage of queer artists and fashion figures who turned the margins into a place of creativity and influence. Who were the people, designers, performers, or subcultures that taught you how to create your own visual language?
TRAN MAGAZINE: Fashion has a complicated relationship with trans people—it can celebrate our image while simultaneously excluding us from the rooms where those images are created. From your perspective, what has genuinely changed in fashion, and where do you think the industry is still behind?
TRAN MAGAZINE: Looking at the current generation of trans and queer creatives, what excites you about the way they’re using fashion? Do you see something in their approach that reminds you of the downtown generation you came up with?
TRAN MAGAZINE: After decades of creating images, challenging expectations, and existing unapologetically in spaces that weren’t always built for you, what does fashion mean to Connie Girl today—and what do you hope your legacy says to the trans people who come after you?
