Legend! Icon! Mother! The Legacy of Kevin Aviance
TRAN MAG: What quality or aspect of nightlife have you seen fade away through the times that you’d like to see back in 2027?
KEVIN: Honestly? The superstar. That larger-than-life energy in the club. Not just the DJ, but the person on the floor who was excellent, who you couldn’t take your eyes off. Individuality. That’s what I miss. I want to see that come back in 2027.
TRAN MAG: What club/event was the first ever event that you attended and where and when did you debut Kevin Aviance as a persona?
Sound Factory. That’s where it all started. It was an after-hours party, but the energy was undeniable: packed, high-energy, electric. I remember walking in and just feeling magical like I was on Cloud 20,000. And then performing that night. That’s the moment Kevin Aviance came alive. It was an amazing experience, one I’ll never forget.
KEVIN: You’ve done shows all across the country, but what club in the country, active or defunct, was your favorite to perform at?
I’ve performed all over the country, but it always comes back to New York. NYC clubs, past or present, are the ones I love most. So many amazing memories live in those rooms. New York is home, and the clubs here made me.
TRAN MAG: As a club kid, what insane look of yours’ was your favorite to pull off and which one took the most work to style and set up?
Whew, baby, there are too many to count! LOL But all my looks have intention and purpose; I put so much of myself and how I was feeling in that moment into each and every look I’ve ever made. That’s what makes each my favorite. Each look I’ve pulled together is something of a timestamp, a time capsule, a snapshot into my life at that exact moment in time.
TRAN MAG: You are a trailblazer in almost all of the categories of queer art or artforms in NYC ballroom + INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN + INTERNATIONAL DJ + DRAG ENTERTAINER + FASHION ICON. What category has been your favorite and what encouraged you to eat up every lane?
I don’t see them as separate categories. Each one is just an element of who I am as a person and an artist. To remove one is to limit all the other categories!
TRAN MAG: You grew up and began performing during the golden ages of house and techno. When you, as a musician, began making music, what artists and producers were most impactful on your direction?
KEVIN: Green Velvet, hands down. As a producer, a lyricist, a house record maker — he was incredible. He was a huge influence on me as an artist.
TRAN MAG: How has the rollout gone for Hippopotamus!, the album you released last October? It’s also your first new album in 20 years, what’s it like getting back in the mindset of releasing your own music after so long?
KEVIN: Honestly, I don’t think about it in terms of a ‘rollout.’ I think about it in terms of purpose.
It’s about what I get to say now that I couldn’t say, or didn’t need to say, twenty years ago. Being a queer musician is never just about making a record but holding space for us to let go and be free. Being visible when visibility wasn’t or isn’t safe. And now, getting to do that from in a completely difference space and place twenty years on is the real story for me.
TRAN MAG: How has performing as a QTBIPOC for so long strengthened yourself as a performer and influenced the way that you are perceived within TGNC spaces?
As a Black queer artist, I know the importance of carrying the history and weight of people who need to see themselves in me. That shapes me as a performer in a real way. It taught me that every movement, every look, every precision means something, because someone in that room is watching for permission to exist louder.
Simply put: we carry our legacies on our sleeves, and it’s important to let others — Black and brown, trans and gender-nonconforming — wear their legacies with pride as well.
TRAN MAG: Throughout your whole career, what has your proudest moment as a queer icon been?
KEVIN: “Cunty” That record keeps on giving; it’s shown up in my life in the most surprising and incredible ways, over and over. That’s my proudest moment, without a doubt.
TRAN MAG: What do you have planned for the rest of 2026 and 2027 and where can we expect to see you perform?
KEVIN: Playing sets, making music, and LIVING! After an energizing NYC Pride season, my team have several talks to take my craft internationally this year — I have so much to look forward to and I can’t wait to share it all, but most of all, I’m so looking forward meeting more of wonderfully queer community outside of the U.S. I love this community so much, I love being a queer man — a Black queer man. My music is about celebrating my Black queer joy, and this community is my heartbeat that keeps me going.
